Program Structure

Animation Basics & Drawing Skills

  • Introduction to Animation Principles

    • Overview: Quick history of animation, what makes animation magical.
    • Key Principles: Start with the basic 3-4 principles like squash & stretch, anticipation, and timing.
    • Exercises:
      • Simple bouncing ball animation (focus on squash & stretch).
      • Walkthrough of animation examples (short clips, classic animations).
  • Drawing & Character Design Fundamentals

    • Simple Drawing Exercises: Quick sketching to get comfortable with shapes and lines. Focus on character proportions and expressions.
    • Basic Character Design: Learn to design simple characters using basic shapes.
    • Exercises:
      • Draw basic characters (front, side, and expressions).
      • Experiment with different character poses and silhouettes.
  • Basic Animation Software Exploration

    • Software Familiarization: Choose between tools like Adobe Animate, Toon Boom, or Pencil2D. Get comfortable with the interface.
    • Basic Keyframing: Animate simple actions like a bouncing ball or a character waving.
    • Exercises:
      • Animate simple objects using keyframes and motion tweens.
      • Create a basic walk cycle (no need to get super detailed, just focus on the movement).

Expanding 2D Animation Skills & Storytelling

  • Understanding Timing & Spacing

    • Timing and Spacing: Work on the timing of animations (how fast/slow an object moves) and how it affects the feel.
    • Exercises:
      • Practice animating different objects at various speeds (e.g., slow heavy object, fast light object).
      • Animate a character reacting to a surprise (anticipation, follow-through).
  • Introduction to Storyboarding

    • Storyboarding Basics: Learn how to plan a simple animation sequence with rough sketches.
    • Visual Storytelling: Focus on using simple drawings to tell a story with limited frames.
    • Exercises:
      • Storyboard a simple, short scene (e.g., someone opening a door and reacting).
      • Focus on camera angles and action flow.
  • More Complex 2D Animations

    • Character Animation: Work on animating more complex movements, like a character walking, jumping, or sitting down.
    • Refining Your Characters: Add more personality to your animations.
    • Exercises:
      • Refine a walk cycle.
      • Create an animation where a character interacts with an object (e.g., picking up a cup, drinking from it).

Introduction to 3D Animation & Cinematic Basics

  • Introduction to 3D Animation Tools

    • Getting Started in 3D: Introduction to software like Blender or Maya. Focus on understanding the 3D workspace and basic modeling.
    • Animating in 3D: Create simple 3D shapes, animate them using keyframes.
    • Exercises:
      • Animate a simple object like a bouncing cube or rolling ball.
      • Familiarize with basic lighting and camera setups.
  • Simple 3D Character Animation

    • Character Rigging (Light Intro): Learn basic character rigging concepts to get started animating a basic 3D character.
    • Simple Character Animation: Animate basic actions, such as a walk cycle or a character jumping.
    • Exercises:
      • Animate a simple character move across the screen.
      • Focus on basic movements without getting into advanced details.
  • Cinematic Basics & Visual Composition

    • Cinematography Basics: Focus on how to use camera angles, framing, and lighting in animation.
    • Visual Composition: How to stage a shot and create more dynamic scenes.
    • Exercises:
      • Create a simple short scene using basic camera moves (e.g., character walks into a room).
      • Experiment with different camera angles.

Refining Skills & Portfolio Development

  • Advanced 2D Animation Concepts

    • Exploring Complex Movement: Work on more intricate animations (e.g., character jumping, running, or reacting to external forces).
    • Working with Backgrounds: Learn how to incorporate backgrounds and props into your 2D animations.
    • Exercises:
      • Animate a short sequence (e.g., a character running or fighting with a backdrop).
      • Add small effects (dust, fire, etc.) to the animation.
  • Finalizing 3D Animations & Sound Design

    • Finishing a 3D Animation: Refine your 3D animation work, focusing on timing and smoothness.
    • Sound Design: Add basic sound effects and music to your animations. Experiment with lip sync.
    • Exercises:
      • Finalize a simple 3D character animation and add sound.
      • Sync simple dialogue or sound effects to animation.
  • Portfolio Creation & Final Project

    • Portfolio Development: Curate the best of your work into a simple online portfolio. Make sure to showcase 2D and 3D pieces.
    • Final Animation Project: Work on a small but complete animation project (2D or 3D). It could be a short character-driven scene or an environment animation.
    • Exercises:
      • Focus on a final project that feels manageable (around 30-60 seconds long).
      • Polish the project and prepare it for a portfolio presentation.
